Con Man- The name alone instinctively makes you think of a swindler; a man or woman who cheats someone by means of a confidence game. I mean, that is the very definition. So if I were to tell you that a new web series is about to air with that very name, you might assume it’s a cop drama, or the TV version of the hustler. And I am here to tell you that you assume WRONG!
Does the name Alan Tudyk sound familiar? Well it should. We all know him from his epic role in the short-lived, but highly popular TV show Firefly where he played Hoban “Wash” Washburne. Well, Tudyk decided to take some of his experiences and write, create, direct, and star in Con Man. But this couldn’t have happened the way he wanted it without the help of many fans’ generous donations through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo. Con Man set records for crowdfunding a web series by raising more than $1 million in 24 hours and more than $3.1 million overall. Now that’s love.
Now, tell me if you heard this one. Wray Nerely (played by Tudyk) starred as a spaceship pilot on Spectrum. Now, he is a struggling actor who is still haunted by the canceled science fiction series that is now cult classic. Jack Moore (played by the devilishly handsome Nathan Fillion) is Wray’s good friend and a successful A-list movie star which has sparked a little jealousy and frustration in the lack of his own success after their short-lived show. So Wray packs his bags and travels the science fiction convention circuit where he makes appearances, signs autographs, and well, you know what happens at the cons. Con Man is his journey and the crazy things he encounters along the way.
The panel started off quickly. Zachary Levi came out and introduced Alan Tudyk, Nathan Fillion, Nolan North, Michael Trucco, Alison Haislip, PJ Haarsma, Tricia Helfer, and Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien. And although this panel was not filled with “your mom” jokes, it still kept us all laughing. That is until almost 17 minutes in when Sherry (or Shari…) got the mic. This woman spent almost 4 minutes talking to the cast, well mostly Nathan, and then proceeded to share her weight loss success and said it was all because of him. Now normally I am one to praise stories like that, but when you take up that much of a panel for 35 pounds… And she had already spoken to them in Hall H! Happy for your Sherry, but we could have had at least 3 more questions during that time…
Back to the topic at hand. The trailer was hilarious and I am definitely going to tune it. BIG shout out to Zachary Levi, Nerd HQ, “Professor X” (you know who you are) the volunteers, and the cast for making our con so extraordinary!
Of course it was another packed house, which means that $4,000 was raised for Operation Smile! That means 16 children will receive new smiles! Operation Smile is a charity dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children and young adults by providing free surgical procedures for cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.
